biography

The work of Chaim van Luit has a strong performative character. Everyday experiences and observations form the basis for a process in which intuition plays an important role. The use of unexpected materials and elements from his immediate surroundings directly connects his work with the tradition that leads from Duchamp, through Dada, to conceptual art. Van Luit’s work not only refers to Modernist traditions and history but is also strongly connected to the context of current events and his personal interpretation of those events. It always resonates the connection between artistic production, a socio-political context and the contingency of creating new meanings. Van Luit brings up current issues in a modest way. Without taking up any particular moral position the artist plays enticingly with relevant and sometimes controversial subject matter.

Chaim van Luit was born in 1985, in Heerlen, NL. He graduated from the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design in 2011 and was a resident at the Jan van Eyck Academy from 2013 to 2015. Van Luit had solo shows at a.o. Kasteel Wijlre, Wijlre (2020, NL); Meessen de Clercq, Brussels (2022, 2018, BE); P////////AKT, Amsterdam (2014, NL); Workshop Gallery, Beirut (2014, LB); Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht (2013, NL), and has been nominated for various awards.
